Submerged arc welding process: submerged arc welding is performed under cover of a layer of flux. In manufacturing chromium carbide overlay plate, welding wire is used as consumable electrode, and the arc is struck between the wire and the work under cover of flux. The arc temperature causes the rapid melting of both the wire, base metal and flux. As the arc length increases, the molten metal pool advances and it solidifies upon cooling. The overlay coating is thus formed by the continuous advancement of the molten pool. The advantages of submerged arc welding process are that it can guarantee stable weld quality, big penetration depth and high working efficiency, even large area overlay welding can be finished in a short time. Besides, the protecting action of flux shields the overlay layer from being contaminated by surrounding impurities, and the purity of overlay layer and the stability of performance can be guaranteed.


Open-arc welding process: open-arc welding is carried out without cover of flux. It uses self shielded flux cored wire, in which the flux core in the wire will decompose and produce shielding gas when welding. Open arc welding is more flexible in application, it can meet overlay welding requirement in various complicated geometry and positions. Meanwhile, it can better control the input heat in the welding process and avoid the thermal distortion of the base material as far as possible. In addition, the welding process can directly view the weld zone and adjust the welding parameter in time to guarantee the quality of overlay.
